Understanding the International Nebosh Diploma
Did you know that from 2018 to 2019, 145 UK employees got fatally injured at work? Fortunately, the number of employees injured critically on the job has decreased steadily since 1981.
This decline is due to changes in industry composition and better workplace safety standards. Today's employers recognise their strategic role in health and safety management. This role demands an appropriate level of professional qualification.
That's why individuals who hold the NEBOSH diploma remain in high demand around the world.
Are you looking for a prestigious qualification? One that will help you go further in your professional career while making a positive difference? Then, consider working towards NEBOSH qualification.
With that in mind, let's take a closer look at the NEBOSH international diploma and whether it's right for you.
Workplace Safety Management
Employee fatalities have dropped since the shift away from the most dangerous industries. These industries include:
- Other heavy industry
Of course, this factor remains just one of many when it comes to workplace safety.
How do we know this to be true? Take a look at a comparison of fatal injury statistics from 1974 and 2017 through 2018. After adjusting for differences in industry coverage, statistics still show a decline in fatalities of 85 per cent.
What happened in 1974 to establish this trend? The introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Who implements Health and Safety at Work Act regulations? Employees trained in risk mitigation and workplace hazards. Finding these employees has often been difficult. Some employers have even had to provide this training.
Over the years, employers have come to appreciate the essential nature of their role in maintaining safer working environments. That's why they continue to turn to NEBOSH graduates to guarantee the safety of their employees.
What is a NEBOSH diploma? How does it prepare employees to take on the responsibilities of workplace health and safety management? Let's take a closer look.
What is the NEBOSH?
The NEBOSH qualification provides students with professional competence in risk management.
It enables students to help organisations make more sensible decisions. Decisions proportionate to meeting business objectives, regulatory requirements, risk management, and other requirements.
Who designed the diploma? Qualified health and safety professionals. These individuals understand the needs and risks associated with the modern workplace. For example, check out these ten common office hazards.
The result? A line of study that's both thorough and achievable.
The NEBOSH International Diploma represents a university degree-level qualification. It also offers a route to Masters-level study.
This qualification is an achievement to feel proud of receiving. You can rest assured your efforts (following your studies) will help make employees safer by identifying workplace hazards.
As the certification becomes more sought after globally, many diploma holders are bringing safety initiatives to workplaces all over the world. In the process, they're improving standards for working individuals on a worldwide scale.
What Does the NEBOSH Cover?
Students pursuing the NEBOSH International Diploma receive training in practical skills. These skills are essential to health and safety professionals. Students get assessed on their ability to apply these skills and knowledge in the workplace.
Qualifications for the NEBOSH have been developed based on extensive research. This research represents a collaboration between health and safety professionals. Other collaborators include professional bodies, employers, and regulators.
The inclusion of these varied stakeholders ensures that NEBOSH studies are rigorous and relevant. Yet, skilled educators also make them achievable and practical.

Factors to Consider Before Selecting a NEBOSH Programme
As you research the best partner to guide you through the certification process, here are a few things to explore:
- Mode of study
- Course structure
- On-going support availability
A closer look at these criteria will help you make the best decision when it comes to the NEBOSH.
Mode of Study
The mode of study refers to how you'll receive course information. It also encompasses how you'll take assessments and interact with instructors and classmates. Options include distance learning, face-to-face classroom experiences, in-company training, and eLearning.
As you make a decision, consider other educational experiences you've received in the past. Have you found one method of information delivery better suited to your learning needs?
You'll also want to factor in your current situation. Are there lifestyle circumstances that preclude you from some modes of study? Or, make some more suitable than others?
As for course structure, think about how and when you'll take classroom training if you opt for a face-to-face experience. Do you prefer evening classes, modular courses, or block release?
Earning a NEBOSH certificate or diploma requires hard work and dedication. You'll need to devote a significant amount of time to completing your coursework and studying for assessments.
What does this dedication of time look like? You'll need to carve out at least 231 hours for taught learning and 225 hours for private study. Of course, these numbers will vary by the individual.
For face-to-face courses, find a location near your work or residence. NEBOSH examinations get administered in more than 130 countries. When it comes to finding a convenient location, you've got options.
Understand that each Learning Partner sets unique fees. These fees reflect the services that each programme offers. They also vary depending on the format of the course.
Before deciding on a programme, contact the partner to find out more about their fees and what they include.
On-going support is another critical factor. Consider it as you explore the right NEBOSH programme.
