Understanding CRSP® Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

Eligibility Guidelines for the CRSP® Certification
To be eligible to apply for the CRSP® certification, you must have a combination of education, professional development, and experience. Depending on the type of education you have obtained, there may be an exemption from the professional development criteria
Applications for the CRSP® certification received on or after July 1, 2018, are required to have the following:
➣ A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any field* OR a 2-year diploma (or certificate) (minimum of 900 hours or 60 credits) in occupational health and safety or equivalent from a recognized academic institution.
➣ 48 months of professional level OHS experience obtained within the last 72 months (minimum of 900 hours/calendar year of practice in OHS)
*if applying with a Bachelor’s degree, the applicant must also demonstrate sufficient professional development in OHS to qualify.
Description of OHS Professional Level Experience
(INSHPO Capability Framework)
OHS Professionals are designers of strategy relating to the organization and management of OHS within the wider context of business processes and external regulatory, market and societal influences. They are influential with senior management and are involved in problem-solving and organizational review and change as advisers and consultants. Their advice is based on conceptual and technical knowledge of design, operations, and management, mediated by experience, analysis of evidence, and critical thought. This enables them to extend their understanding and control to novel, unknown, and complex risks. They understand how to access, use, critically evaluate, and develop the evidence base, and they value professional collaboration. OHS Professionals will engage with any level of the organization from the shop floor to the boardroom as well as other functions and professionals.
Applying For Certification
Individuals interested in achieving the CRSP® certification must first make an application to the BCRSP. Once your application is reviewed for eligibility, there is a mandatory certification examination.
English or French as a Second Language
Applicants whose first language is neither English nor French must:
➣Submit documentation verifying a minimum level of 94-101 (IBT) on a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®) IBT; a band score of 7 on the International English Language Testing System or a score of 785-900 on a Test de français international (TFI™). (Equivalent proof of language proficiency (e.g., a university assessment) will also be accepted)
International Applicants
If your education credentials are from outside of Canada that you will be using in the application submission, please review the documentation requirements below.
International applications are accepted for the CRSP® certification; however, additional documentation requirements may apply.
➣International academic credentials must be translated to English or French and be verified by an official translator.
➣International credentials must be submitted to a Canadian Credentialing Agency prior to application submission.
Application Form
To apply, an applicant completes an application form and, together with all supporting documentation, and a non-refundable application fee, submits it to the BCRSP for processing. The application form requires details concerning formal education, professional development, and related experience. In addition, a reference questionnaire and practice questionnaire must be completed by individuals who have a sound knowledge of the applicant’s work performance. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all information is submitted with the application along with the required documentation. Please review the eligibility requirements before submitting an application as the application fee is non-refundable.
The applicant is cautioned not to proceed with the application submission unless the minimum eligibility requirements are met as the application fee of $525 + GST/HST is non-refundable.
To start the application process, you will first need to create a profile. After clicking the link below, you will be asked to create an account profile (step 1). Step 2 is the application form selection – you can review the forms in detail without submission of fees. The non-refundable application fee is only required once your application is complete and you are ready to submit it to the BCRSP for review.

For applicants with a MyCreds/MesCertif, My eQuals, or Digitary CORE account, you can share your digital documents with BCRSP by selecting the 2nd Share option “Send my documents to a Registered Organization” and then select “Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP)” in the Recipient field. Upon submission of your application, the BCRSP will review your eligibility based on the criteria outlined above. If your application meets the requirements, you will be notified to proceed with the mandatory CRSP® certification examination.
CRSP® Certification Examination
The certification examination is designed to assess your knowledge and understanding of key occupational health and safety concepts. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions that cover various aspects of occupational health and safety, including risk management, hazard identification, regulatory compliance, and emergency response planning.
Preparing for the CRSP® Certification Examination

Additionally, candidates may consider enrolling in exam preparation courses or utilizing study materials provided by reputable OHS organizations.
CRSP® Certification Renewal
Once you have successfully obtained the CRSP® certification, you must participate in ongoing professional development activities to maintain your certification. The BCRSP requires certified CRSPs to renew their certification every five years by demonstrating continued professional development and adherence to the BCRSP Code of Ethics.
